What is an Allied Health Assistant?

Allied Health Assistants play an important role in helping health professionals. They play an important role in the healthcare system and are a great option for students to gain firsthand knowledge into the practice they want to step into after graduation. Allied Health Assistants (AHA’s) work under the supervision of healthcare professionals such as speech therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and dietitians.

 

What do they do?

Allied Health Assistants have key responsibilities including helping to implement treatment plans, providing therapy exercises and performing administrative tasks. By taking on more routine or administrative tasks, the Allied Health Assistant allow health professionals to focus on more complex cases and higher-level treatment. Most AHA’s work in hospitals, private practices, community health services and aged care facilities.

 

Skills Required to be an Allied Health Assistant

While a formal degree is not necessary, most allied health assistants do require vocational training, certifications or diplomas in allied health. The necessary skills required include:


1.       Clear Communication Skills: The ability to clearly communicate with clients and their families who are unfamiliar with medical jargon. These skills are also needed to effectively communicate with medical teams.

2.       Compassion: The ability to show compassion to clients and their families and be able to treat them with respect and care.  

3.       Patience: The ability to be patient with clients who are learning new skills and may need extra help and support.

 

Due to their broad responsibilities, there is a growing demand for Allied Health Assistants in hospitals, clinics and healthcare centres. They play a vital role in the healthcare system and significantly help to alleviate the workload from health professionals. It proves to be a loved profession due to its rewarding nature as well as the contribution to improving people’s lives. This career is encouraged to anyone who is interested in healthcare and patient interaction.
